Insight2Uni Mentoring

Our aspirational Insight2Uni mentors are current black-heritage students from leading universities who are uniquely positioned to be a trusted voice, offering authentic guidance and invaluable insights. With their support, mentees fulfil their potential.

We know that time is precious so our mentoring sessions take place using video-conferencing links. This provides the flexibility to easily fit the sessions around existing study commitments.

  • 87% of our Insight2Uni mentees secure offers from top universities.
  • 79% of our Insight2Uni mentees feel more comfortable to go to a top university.
  • 55% of our Insight2Uni mentees feel better able to make informed decisions.

Just take a look at what previous mentees had to say:

Mentees Insight2Uni - University of East Anglia

"I feel much more confident about considering different univeristies now. I also feel more assured that I could apply to a university like UEA"

Rayhanna2023 Mentee

"My mentor, Tobi, was easy to talk to and helped me a lot. I found it easy to relate to them, and having someone like them as representation was just what I needed to push through the application process."

Lesley2023 Mentee

"My mentor played a crucial role in boosting my confidence by constantly reassuring me that I have the capability to apply to a top third ranked university like the UEA."

Binta2023 Mentee

"I had a wonderful experience with my mentor; she was very kind and showed genuine interest for my concerns. Her advice was insightful and greatly appreciated especially for my degree options."

Adenike2023 Mentee

"My mentor really got the social and personal side of things, and she gave me advice that felt just right, drawing from her own experiences."

Maida2023 Mentee

"It's natural to gravitate towards people who share your background, rather than stepping out of your comfort zone. When there's a lack of black representation in university, it can feel like there aren't support systems in place to address discrimination if it occurs. However, my mentor reassured me that there's a community to be found at university."

Abigail2023 Mentee

"I would absolutely recommend the programme to others. It really boosted my confidence and gave me a better understanding of university life, as well as effective strategies for improving my grades. My mentor was fantastic; we clicked right away, and she was always available to answer any questions I had."

Applications Open for Insight2Uni 2025!

We’re excited to announce that applications are now open for our 2025 Insight2Uni programme that provides your Black-heritage Year 12 / Level 3 Year 1 students with a mentor of shared heritage from a top university.

Delivered by charity, With Insight Education, the programme offers:

  • A fully funded university visit to experience campus life.
  • Expert guidance on the university application process.
  • Personalised support from a trained student mentor, helping to build confidence and knowledge to successfully apply to aspirational universities.
  • Students can expect to be matched to a mentor from Imperial College London, Newcastle, University of East Anglia and now also Lancaster University.

Applications are welcome from A Level and BTEC students of African, Caribbean, and mixed-Black heritage who are on track to achieve ABB or the equivalent. With Insight is especially keen to hear from students who receive free school meals (FSM), are the first in their family to attend university, or have care experience.

Students should apply using this link: https://bit.ly/46SPYYs

The deadline is the 31 December.

To make sharing this opportunity with students easier for teachers and advisors, With Insight has created an Insight2Uni resource pack which is accessible here. It includes a student flyer, an explanatory video, student testimonials and sample text messages. They’d also be delighted to attend an assembly or meeting to speak directly with your students about the programme.

If you have any questions or to arrange for someone to talk to your students, please feel free to reach out to the Insight2Uni Programme Manager Keji Thompson (keji@withinsightedu.org).
