Black Humanities Project

Welcome to the Black Humanities Project (BHP), a student-led, grassroots activist initiative designed to;

• expose, explore, and empower black humanities;
  
• inspire young ethnically diverse students to consider studying an arts and humanities subject at higher education;
  
• champion a more diverse curriculum within arts and humanities subjects; and;
  
• address the disparity and close the degree awarding gap between white students and ethnically diverse students.

The Black Humanities Project began in 2020 and originated from the Decolonise LDC, a student working group within the school of Literature, Drama and Creative writing that aims to decolonize the curriculum and demand constructive change within the department.

The partnership between UEA Outreach and the Black Humanities Project has developed and strengthened over the past few years to provide school pupils with opportunities to engage in arts and humanities related activities.

Expose. Explore. Empower. is an annual event for year 9 Black and minority ethnic students delivered by the Black Humanities Project team at the Sainsbury Centre.

Activities at the event aim to:

• Expose hidden and untold stories of Black and Minority Ethnic figures through interactive activities.
• Increase understanding of what skills can be developed on an arts and humanities course.
• Explore the myriad of graduate opportunities for arts and humanities students.
• Inspire young Black and minority ethnic students to consider studying an arts and humanities degree at university.
• Empower young people to make a more informed decision about their futures.

The Black Humanities Project Team are delighted to announce they are now offering in-school workshops for Key Stage 3-4.

BHP workshops aim to:

These workshops will be delivered by the Black Humanities Project Student Coordinators who are all studying humanities subjects at the UEA. This gives your students the added benefits of meeting and learning what it is really like to study a humanities course from current students.
